Joseph Smith's Polygamy
Episode 16 (History): The Prophet Secretly Teaches Polygamy
/

(Nauvoo Polygamy–1841)

The first year of Nauvoo polygamy began with Joseph Smith’s time-and-eternity sealing to Louisa Beaman on April 5, 1841. His subsequent eternity-only sealings to legally married women appear curious to nearly all observers. Sometime at the end of 1841, the Prophet began urging select devout men and women to enter into polygamous marriages in order to fulfill God’s command. Joseph proposed to Nancy Rigdon, daughter of Sidney Rigdon, in 1842. His written proposal, known as “The Happiness Letter,” was later published in the Sangamo Journal.
