Polygamy was a curiosity to Joseph Smith as early as 1831. Apparently he learned that it could be divinely sanctioned while intensely studying the Bible. But when he determined that he would practice it is not known. Using all available historical evidence, these historical essays provide a chronological look at the process through which the teachings and practice unfolded during the fourteen years between the Church’s 1830 organization and Joseph’s June 27, 1844, death.
